Years ago, the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets had a tumultuous relationship. In those years
of Cold War both potencies were constantly in red alert for a potentially imminent interstellar war. The Empire was
trying to expand and conquer new worlds to increase its power but the always growing Federation was a worthy
enemy, as well as other potencies, like the Romulan Star Empire and the Tholian Assembly, for example.

When the relations with the Federation deteriorated, The Organian Peace Treaty was established, preventing a war of
galactic proportions and establishing a Neutral Zone. In face of a unquestionable powerful superior beings, The
Empire had to comply... But it seemed like those non-corporeal beings, had more to do than watching the
movements of our races - and they certainly had no passion for conquering neither of us also.

Then The Empire - and sometimes non-authorized self-motivated warriors - had more than eventual opportunities to
try to weaken and defeat the enemy by crossing the Neutral Zone in several missions. In the few years that preceded
the Camp Khitomer Alliance Treaty, in the F.S.Y. of 2293, some attempts were still tried - and that is where and when I entered.

The change, as it can be verified in this front and
profile demonstrative, with the unexpected genetic
spinal formation caused by the First Experiment.
Officially this subject, due its many controversies, is
rarely debated and is preferred to be left unspoken.

UPDATE ON
"THE FIRST EXPERIMENT"

Infiltration into the Federation space to destroy ships of the Starfleet and obtain data and technologies were simple tasks that sometimes worked, sometimes not. As the (not-always-so) Cold War continued for almost a century, the Empire tried every possible ways to boldly infiltrate into Federation space, and even into the very heart of the Starfleet Terran headquarters. That meant espionage...

Some almost thirty years ago, the genetic scientists of Qo'noS were ready to disseminate the most powerful change in our people. The Ansara Laboratories for Genetic Bioengineering, the greatest center of bio-development of our race, supposedly had found the answers to generate better warriors by increasing strength and brain capabilities through genetic alteration. Hundreds of prior tests were done in co-related issues, all with success.

The Klingon High Council after years of discussion then approved the application of the tugh'thul ghegh ngong nachDub Project, a project to genetically improve the power of our race. Scientists of the time were dealing with medulla compounds to force genetic growing of the cerebral cortex and the gray mass. It was supposed to increase mental capabilities and strength. Well, this is not supposed to be a lesson on genetics therefore I will spare you from specific details that are too complicated and yet classified in some levels. Enough to say that the project was executed not only in a planetary scale, but expanded to all boundaries of the Empire. The scientists were deadly sure of its results, but just to assure the perpetuation of our race, in case of any problem, a special portion of selected Klingon citizens of all areas were spared in a secret place, in a planet of the Empire...

As the years passed by, the experiment proved itself unsatisfactory - not to say a complete failure - on its primary motif of increasing mental power, intelligence and strength. The less I can say is that the project was done in a hurry, with many blanks left behind, many untested reactions and unexpected possibilities.

Our race ended up suffering a major physical mutation only. One that no one expected. A genetic bone-cellular hypertrophy. Beyond the normal end of the spine, in the neck, a new bone formation developed, generating new vertebras. This spinal formation proceeded growing way up, opening space through the brain and becoming a more of a cartilaginous type of spinal bone, which naturally prevented any serious brain damage. Hence, this resulted in a slight enlargement our cranial box to allow the brain and the new formation to co-exist without blowing out due pressure and tissue damage.

With the new vertebras, a new neural web grew up, interlinking them through both brain hemispheres. Fortunately, none of the brain's regular functions were endangered. The spinal formation then grew out of the skull, again taking its bone-rigid form, from the upper back side of the head and proceeded symmetrically along the skull to the front part of the head, diminishing the new vertebra size until its end, in the bridge of the nose. In its external development the new atrophyated vertebra blended with the external structure of the cranial box an its bones, becoming part of it and not exhibiting any mobility function. All this process was also followed by a gradual hair loss from its beginning in the forehead to halfway back the head.

The beginning of the unexpected genetic mutation inspired some fear among part of our people, mainly because the variable pain it caused for several weeks in different individuals. It was not confortable to have a "new spine" growing in the head... Fortunately the Empire was able to control the panic, spreading the information that the change was, somehow, expected - and intentional. The government could not admit so wide a mistake, mainly one that affected so deeply all the people in all the corners of our Empire. The mistake was done. The scientists tried to discover what had gone wrong, but it was too late. Maybe they had used protomatter in their formula... As time passed by it became clear that that change was there to stay. Our race had changed forever. As warriors, we accepted our fate. Klingons don't care that much about appearance. We got used to it. At least all this served to make us look much more visually aggressive and differ us more from the Human race...

UPDATE ON
"THE SECOND EXPERIMENT"

If the first experiment didn't help us to gain strength to better defeat our enemies, it also made our infiltration among Humans even harder. Before it, as "humanoids", our body resemblance could allow a more easily cover for our spy agents - some Klingon, some Klingon-Human breed -, but then it became almost practically impossible. We had, then, the Klingon citizens that were spared from the experiment, but even the eventual usage of these citizens and warriors was restricted because the majority of them had neither the military background nor diplomatic talent necessary for a quick learning and the development of an undercover mission. The urge of necessity did make another solution to be created, to minimize the effects of the First Experiment. So, a new way to decrease the mutation and allow our new spies to infiltrate had to be developed and applied quickly.

A new team of scientists were called to find a solution - as the majority of the first ones were severely punished due the failure of the First Experiment and its high costs... Occasionally, they seemed to have found a way to do it and, in the urge of the necessity, the High Council again approved The Second Experiment. This time, a gradual application of it would be done in planetary scale. But, again, the new genetic mutation also proved itself slow and not quite effective. It only diminished the prior results of the First Experiment by reducing the spinal formation off of our people's heads. The result was more generic and it provoked only a kind of "melting" of the bone formation, acting differently in every Klingon individual. Again, the physical result was less than the desired... Then, at this point, this kind of genetic altering was totally abandoned by our government - al least in terms of major scale alteration. The costs were abusive and the weapons research seemed to prove itself always more effective. Even today the Second Experiment is still being applied amidst our people...

Nevertheless, in minor scale, only to permit spies to blend among Humans, special individual alteration through temporarily agents of genetic constriction and surgery make up combined. The results were laborious temporary and time consuming, but they had a unique advantage: they worked!

COMMENTS ON MY MISSION
"I, SPY (or THE OTHER I)"

With the ascension of my family line and after many successful missions I run in the ships I served in, and also due the fact I had learned and dominated the Humans Standard Language by myself while other warriors only wanted to fight, sing, drink and apply to the mu'QaD ves (the Klingon tradition of Curse-Warfare), I was personally called to a very "diplomatic" mission. I would have to learn how to be Human to serve as a spy! I would become Human! Not an easy task to a warrior, to be "gentle" and "polite" as a normal Human is! But I knew that the glory of a highly difficult mission like this one would bring me and my family name even higher into the Empire's castes. I accepted. Some time later, there I was as ugly as a regular Human.

The mission proved itself successful and a year later I was back to my normal Klingon face. If you want to read more about the mission and see my likeness as a Human, just open The Mission Report File and you will know who I turned myself into and what I did.
